Sciatica pain
Sciatic pain is common complaint in pregnancy and postpartum. We can see this as a message from the body rather than just a symptom to suffer through. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and down the legs, and during pregnancy it can become irritated by postural changes, pelvic imbalance, emotional stress, or the way we move—or don’t move—through our days. Many moms are told that sciatic pain is simply “part of pregnancy,” but in my experience, it is often an invitation to slow down and restore balance.
From a holistic perspective, relief comes from supporting the whole person. Gentle movement such as prenatal yoga, mindful walking, or pelvic rocking can help bring space back into the pelvis and reduce nerve compression. Warmth applied to the lower back or hips, regular stretching, epsom salt baths, and bodywork like chiropractic care, massage, or craniosacral therapy can be deeply effective. I encourage moms to consider their daily habits—how they sit, sleep, and carry stress—because the nervous system responds to emotional tension just as much as physical strain.
Trusting the body’s wisdom, nourishing it with rest, hydration, and loving touch, and addressing imbalances early can make a profound difference—not only in easing discomfort, but in preparing the body and spirit for birth. As midwives, we hold space for this kind of healing, honoring pregnancy as a transformative journey rather than a condition to endure.
